Brooklyn Erbs Palsy Attorney

Erb's Palsy is an injury that typically occurs during birth. Usually, traction must be applied to the neck when the head is delivered. If the large grouping of nerves that comes off the cervical spine and controls the hand and arm is over stretched during the delivery of a baby, the nerve root may experience swelling and cause paralysis of those nerves. A baby with Erb's Palsy will hold their arm down at their side, instead of normally flexed up against their body. The affected arm will also not move properly if startled.

Is your baby suffering from Erb's Palsy due to a negligent doctor in Brooklyn? An attorney can help! Contact a Brooklyn Erbs Palsy Attorney today.

Signs of Erbs Palsy Include:
  • Inability to sit upright
  • Inability to crawl
  • Fatigued eyelid on one side of face
  • Loss of control in arm
  • Droopy eye or other facial paralysis

The paralysis associated with Erb's Palsy is usually temporary and may last only a couple of days. In some cases, the paralysis results in tearing of the nerves and lasts much longer. Physical therapy is vital in helping the child recover, and sometimes, surgery may be required.

With Erb's Palsy, the affected nerves are the upper cervical nerve roots, C5-6. These nerves are part of the brachial plexus (the fifth cervical root C5 through the first thoracic root T1), a group of nerves that come from the spinal cord and supply movement and feeling to the arm, shoulder and the hand. A C5-6 injury is associated with problems involving elbow and shoulder function. Injuries that are more severe may involve the next root down in the chain, C7, which causes weakness in the wrist and hand.
